In many regions, including the Manatee-Sarasota area, the shortage of skilled healthcare workers has reached critical levels. Trained healthcare professionals are needed in numerous disciplines to meet current and projected requirements.
In 2010, CareerEdge Funders Collaborative announced new healthcare workforce grants totaling $387,619 over the next 12- months with the option for an additional two years based on performance and availability of funds to six healthcare organizations in Manatee and Sarasota Counties.
In 2011, CareerEdge announced second year and new healthcare workforce grants totaling $321,304 over the next 12-months.
As of December 15, 2011, CEFC has served 1,475 individuals across the Healthcare and Bridges to Careers for Low-Skilled Workers. Participants have completed over 6,000 classes and earned a total of 4,313 certificates/credentials. CareerEdge has developed a partnership with the healthcare employers they are funding to assist employers in identifying, understanding and addressing the challenges they are experiencing in hiring, retaining and advancing their workforce.
This initiative created value for employers by helping employers identify, understand and address workers' skill development needs with the funding and partnership commitment from CareerEdge. The Healthcare Employer Partners have planned training for 410 incumbent workers and project 118 new jobs.

Blake Medical Center is a 383-bed, acute-care, full-service hospital and a leading provider of quality, affordable healthcare serving our community since 1973. Blake offers a wide range of healthcare services including: 24-hour emergency care, open-heart surgery, cancer care, joint replacement, back surgery and rehabilitation among many others. Blake provides free health education, screenings and support groups to improve the health of our community. Blake has a tradition of excellence that has earned us 16 designations and certifications from some of the most respected names in healthcare.
Kobernick Anchin is a Sarasota Manatee Jewish Housing not-for-profit, non-exclusionary corporation. Its mission, primarily, is to plan, develop, operate, and maintain facilities and services to meet the requirements of the elderly of the Jewish Community of Sarasota and Manatee counties, who desire a supportive environment that provides for their residential, social, health, safety, and religious needs.
Life Care Center of Sarasota is a 120-bed Skilled Nursing Facility. The facility has 50 Medicaid/Medicare certified beds that are primarily used to serve the needs of long-term care residents. The additional 70 beds in the facility are Medicare certified only, and are used for the rehabilitation of short-term patients. Short-term residents are on average for 20 days after which they return to the community. LCCS has a thriving outpatient program, with many of short-term residents returning for outpatient therapy.
Manatee Memorial Hospital is a 319-bed privately-held hospital that serves the needs of Manatee County. MMH is one of the largest employers in this county of 318,000 residents where the current unemployment level is 11.5%. A comprehensive and continually growing line of medical services including critical care, cardiac, emergency care, medical/telemetry, labor and delivery, neo-natal intensive care, pediatrics, in-patient or out-patient behavioral health, and wound care are made available to permanent and transient seasonal residents of the county through the care and services provided by more than 1,500 employees.
Pines of Sarasota is a private, non-profit organization that began more than 60 years ago. It has grown into a multi-faceted, 17 acre community which encompasses a long-term care facility serving residents in Assisted Living, Skilled Nursing, Rehabilitation and Alzheimer's/dementia care. Pines original mission was to provide adults of limited financial resources with excellent care, encompassing health, social and support services and programs that enhance the quality of life in a residential setting. Pines provides residential services to more than 400 seniors each year, providing rehabilitation/therapy services to more than 2,000 people annually, with a staff of nine full-time therapists.
Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida, Inc. is an independently operated affiliate of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, the nation's oldest and largest voluntary family planning reproductive health agency. Our affiliate provides confidential and affordable medical and counseling services and education programs through seven health centers in a 15-county area.
Sarasota Memorial Hospital earned the prestigious Magnet Nursing Services Recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, the foremost authority on nursing, in 2003 and was re-designated in 2008. Widely regarded as one of the nation's best indicators of how well a hospital takes care of its patients, Magnet is the highest level of recognition that can be given to a nursing organization, and only five percent of hospitals in the US have achieved this honor. Research indicates that Magnet designated facilities outperform their peers in recruiting and retaining nurses and that Magnet hospitals have reduced mortality and morbidity rates, increased patient satisfaction, and better nurse to patient ratios. Sarasota Memorial is the only hospital in the region to have earned this honor.
Tidewell Hospice is serving more than 1,200 patients daily in Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte and DeSoto counties, Tidewell is one of the largest not-for-profit hospices in the U.S. Home-based palliative care is the basic premise of the program, involving the support of physicians, registered nurses, social service counselors, certified nursing assistants and volunteers, all following a prescribed plan of care. Tidewell's services are available to everyone, regardless of a to pay.
